ELECAMPANE ROOT
Flora Farm grown bulk Elecampane root harvested in 2024 with help from volunteers of the Clallam Growers Collective!
This Elecampane grew from volunteer root crowns left behind from the 2022 Elecampane root harvest (that was also harvested with the help of the Clallam Growers Collective) and was grown for 2 years before it was harvested earlier this fall.
There are few plants that are as comprehensively supportive to the respiratory and digestive system as Elecampane for either acute or chronic conditions.
Energetically, Elecampane is warming and slightly drying to the bodily systems. It is ideal for respiratory conditions of a wet, damp and phlegmy nature in which the need to expectorate (or cough out) is necessary and the overall ability to take deep, regular breaths have been hindered.
Elecampane offers unique digestive support in that it is a warming carminative with a slightly bitter edge. It is very rare in herbal medicine to have an herb that supports digestive processes through bitterness without having a cooling presence on the system energetically, making this an ideal remedy for winter time.
Like most root medicines, Elecampane root is best extracted through prolonged, low heat exposure either through decocting, simmering in broths or infusing into honey or syrups at home. (For full plant profile on Elecampane, you can check out the Flora Farm blog).
